Joys Camp overview

This award winning, luxury camp is located in eastern Samburu, in the Shaba National Reserve. It's located at the same site as author Joy Adamson’s former camp. Joy’s Camp is a small, intimate camp which offers an opportunity to watch some of Kenya’s most diverse game. This is a perfect place to relax and unwind, with a chance to watch the variety of wild animals in the area, as they often congregate at the watering hole in front of the camp.

Joy's Camp Rooms:

There are ten tents, each with a private bathroom. The tents have private verandahs for relaxing or watching game, and are nicely decorated with local cloth, Boran/Somali fabrics, and handmade glass. The style is sophisticated, with Moorish arches, wrought iron hanging lamps, and white canvas. The tents are furnished as doubles or twins, and have room for two extra beds for children under the age of 16. (Please note that the camp only has five extra beds.) The bathrooms are modern, and have stone floors, a flush toilet, and showers with hot and cold running water. No hairdryers are allowed.

Joy's Camp Restaurants & Bars:

There is a daily set menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Joy's Camp will try to accommodate dietary requirements if advised in advance. Riverside bush breakfasts and sun-downers are available which makes an interesting and special experience. Bottled water is provided free of charge.

Joy's Camp Facilities:

Guests can choose from game drives or guided bush walks, both of which are led by certified guides. The camp has its own 4x4 vehicles, which may be reserved for exclusive use for an additional charge. Cultural trips to local Boran villages may be possible depending on the time of year, since the local tribes are nomadic. There is a small museum dedicated to Joy Adamson and the camp has a natural swimming pool with massages also available. The front desk staff can send e-mails upon request and although mobile phone coverage is not always wonderful, it may be possible - please contact the staff for advice over this. Joy's Camp is rated by the Ecotourism Society of Kenya; it uses solar energy for lighting and to heat water, and it also supports local conservation and social development projects.

A generator powers the camp in the early morning and in the evening. Guests should bring their own adaptors and converters as required. The tents run on a solar inverter system. The Chaffa airstrip is about a 15-minute drive from the camp, and there are daily flights to and from here.
